NASA’s Europa Clipper Mission Set to Investigate the Ocean Beneath Europa’s Icy Surface

NASA’s Europa Clipper mission is set to delve into the depths of Europa, one of Jupiter’s most captivating moons. Researchers hypothesize that beneath its frigid exterior lies an expansive ocean that may harbor conditions conducive to life as we know it. The Europa Clipper spacecraft is designed to conduct 49 flybys of Europa, employing state-of-the-art instruments to examine its icy surface and the ocean beneath.

The mission will prioritize the analysis of surface materials believed to have originated from the underlying ocean, actively searching for indicators of organic compounds and investigating gases that may escape from the moon’s surface.

Among the key instruments aboard the spacecraft is the Mapping Imaging Spectrometer for Europa (MISE), which will identify the various materials present on Europa’s surface. Additionally, the Europa Thermal Emission Imaging System (E-THEMIS) will help locate potential hot spots that could signify active geological processes.

Investigating Europa’s Internal Structure

By utilizing the Europa Clipper Magnetometer (ECM) and the Plasma Instrument for Magnetic Sounding (PIMS), scientists will assess the moon’s induced magnetic field and the electrical currents surrounding it.
