A body was discovered in the landing gear compartment, or wheel well, of a United Airlines aircraft after it arrived in Hawaii on Christmas Eve, the airline confirmed.
United Flight 202 departed from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday morning, arriving at Kahului Airport in Maui later that afternoon.
The airline stated that it was still unclear how or when the individual accessed the landing gear, which is only reachable from the outside of the Boeing 787-10 aircraft.
United Airlines has confirmed it is collaborating with law enforcement officials as part of an ongoing investigation.
The identity of the deceased has not been released.
In a statement, the local police department informed Hawaii News Now that it was investigating the discovery of a body “on an incoming flight from the mainland this afternoon.” Further details have not been disclosed at this time.
