As the offseason looms, Gerrit Cole finds himself in a challenging position. Despite needing to focus on helping the New York Yankees clinch the AL pennant and securing their first World Series appearance since 2009, recent events have added complexity to his situation.
During the Yankees’ Game 2 win against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night, Cole struggled to maintain control. He was pulled one out into the fifth inning after a series of missteps allowed the Guardians to regain momentum.
In the first four innings, Cole gave up four hits but managed to escape trouble due to the Guardians’ failure to capitalize with timely hits. However, in the fifth inning, things took a turn. After allowing the first two batters to reach base and walking Jose Ramirez, Steven Kwan scored on a sacrifice fly.
Following a walk to Lane Thomas, Cole was removed from the game, casting a shadow over his offseason plans and decisions.
Gerrit Cole’s final line tonight:
4 1/3 IP
2 ER
6 H
4 BB
4 KCole looked good early, started to unravel in the fifth and Clay Holmes limited the damage in relief. #Yankees still lead 3-2.

What’s Next for Gerrit Cole This Offseason?
Given his performance in Game 2 of the ALCS, returning to New York seems like a logical choice for Cole. At 34 years old, he has four years and $144 million left on his contract. Opting to stay with the Yankees might be the most prudent decision, especially considering the crowded free agency market.
There is potential upside. Jacob deGrom secured a five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers at age 35. However, the question remains: should Cole take such a risk?
Cole’s performance over the past six seasons indicates that he could be a valuable asset for any team willing to take a chance. Despite not being at his best on Tuesday night, he remains a reliable starter and could command a significant raise if he chooses to opt out of his current contract.
Alternatively, Cole could use the opt-out option to pressure the Yankees into extending his contract without exploring other opportunities.
Tuesday’s game did little to clarify Cole’s future. His best move now is to focus on winning a World Series with the Yankees. If he can contribute to their first championship since 2009, his value will undoubtedly increase, potentially justifying any demands he might make.
