The teenage son of British photojournalist Paul Lowe has been charged with his murder.
Paul Lowe, 61, a renowned photographer who documented conflicts such as the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian war (1992-95), was discovered fatally stabbed along a hiking trail in California on Saturday.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that his son, Emir Lowe, 19, faces a murder charge in connection with his father’s death.
According to records from the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner, Mr. Lowe sustained a stab wound to the neck, as reported by PA.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated, “The District Attorney’s office has filed one count of murder against suspect Emir Lowe for the killing of his father, Christian Paul Lowe. Further information is not available at this time.”
Emir Lowe is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Wednesday at the West Covina Courthouse, as noted by the department.
Police indicated that the incident occurred around 3:28 PM at Mount Baldy Road, near Stoddard Canyon Falls.
A statement from the sheriff’s department mentioned that officers responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon and discovered a “white male adult suffering trauma to his upper torso.”
Emergency services pronounced Mr. Lowe dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s department also reported that a white male adult was observed driving away from the scene and later was involved in a solo traffic accident a few miles away. The individual was detained for further investigation.
King’s College London, where Mr. Lowe served as a visiting professor in war studies, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the esteemed photojournalist.
“It is with profound sadness that we learned of Professor Paul Lowe’s passing,” a statement shared on X read.
“Paul was a Visiting Professor in the Department of War Studies, a Professor of Photojournalism at the University of the Arts London, and an award-winning photojournalist affiliated with VII Academy. He was a friend, colleague, and collaborator whose impactful work highlighted the Siege of Sarajevo and addressed its enduring legacy. We were privileged to collaborate with him on various projects focused on art and reconciliation.
“His infectious energy, warmth, creativity, initiative, and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. He will be sorely missed.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this challenging time.”
