William Talks About Using His Privilege to Aid the Homeless Community

Prince William Expresses Strong Belief in Ending Homelessness

“I firmly believe that homelessness can be eradicated,” states Prince William, underscoring his commitment to leverage his role for the benefit of those in need. In an upcoming ITV documentary, he addresses his ongoing efforts to combat homelessness through his initiative, Homewards, a venture some critics have labeled inconsistent with his affluent background. The Prince asserts, “I come here with no ulterior motives; my sole aim is to assist those who require help.”

During an address in London, the Prince reiterated his strong belief in the possibility of eradicating homelessness: “I am convinced that it can and must be achieved.” He emphasizes that his prominent public platform serves to positively influence significant issues like homelessness.

“This is a formidable challenge,” he remarks about his five-year Homewards initiative, which has established both local and national collaborations to mitigate homelessness across six regions in the UK. “I enjoy a good challenge, but it is not something I can tackle alone,” he adds. He believes that everyone deserves a secure and stable home, which ultimately benefits society as a whole.

Critics, including anti-monarchists, have labeled his housing initiative as “hypocritical,” particularly given his ownership of multiple residences and a substantial private annual income exceeding £20 million from the Duchy of Cornwall. However, advocates for the homeless, like Mick Clarke, the chief executive of the Passage, commend Prince William’s involvement. Clarke highlights the importance of using his “significant platform” to raise awareness that homelessness should not exist in modern Britain.

“This cause is personal for William. His commitment dates back to when his mother took him to the Passage at the age of 11,” Clarke explained in an interview with the BBC. As the patron of the Passage, the Prince has witnessed firsthand the potential to prevent and end homelessness through his numerous private visits. “This experience inspired the creation of Homewards, driven by his personal interactions with those affected by homelessness.”

His early experiences with his mother, Diana, visiting the Passage in central London, profoundly impacted his perspective, opening his eyes to the struggles faced by those living outside the comforts of royal life.

Prince William’s initiatives have grown increasingly proactive, including plans to develop social housing on Duchy of Cornwall land. These developments will incorporate “wrap-around support” designed to assist individuals with diverse social, psychological, and health challenges stemming from prolonged periods without stable housing. This “housing first” approach takes cues from Finland’s successful strategies to reduce homelessness, focusing on securing housing first and then providing comprehensive support.

At a recent awards ceremony for the CenterPoint youth homelessness charity, Prince William characterized homelessness as a “complex societal issue,” reiterating that it is indeed solvable. “To achieve this, we must cultivate a movement that drives systemic change—one that prioritizes prevention over mere management and guarantees that all young people have access to genuinely affordable housing options to live and flourish independently,” he stated.

The awards ceremony, which took place at the British Museum on Wednesday night, celebrated the accomplishments of young individuals who have faced homelessness. One recipient, Shannon, expressed her disbelief at receiving the Inspirational Award and praised the Prince for his authentic engagement. “He was genuinely interested and wanted to connect with us,” the 26-year-old remarked after receiving her award from Prince William.

Prince William has served as a patron of CenterPoint since 2005, demonstrating his long-standing dedication to addressing youth homelessness.
